The craziest story ever

I wanted to come up with a creative story that would rival something Ryan Gerber would come up with..... Something like..... We were in our backyard taking out the trash. All of a sudden a bear jumped from behind a fence. Tim grabbed Mac out of the bears clutches, and punched the bear in the face. Or we were in the mall and thought it was just a fathead poster.... When all of a sudden the poster was a ragging bear. David and Tim had just read "in a pitt with a lion on a snowy day"... They grabbed some plastic hangers and tore the bear apart. I jumped in and pulled Mac from the bears clutches... Well, we were going to the movie theater. The parking lot looked barren. We stepped out when all of a sudden.... This bear came out of nowhere. But better yet, so did Chuck Norris. Needless to say, Chuck round-housed kicked the bear to death. He reminded me to look both ways before we ever cross a street.

Well, we were at a museum and saw a stuffed bear. We have been having a wild time here in Montana.

Pride of Helena

SiWell I am back in Helena, MT for the holidays and the buzz around town in the Carroll College Saints football team. They just won the NAIA National Championship for the 5th time in six years. A photographer snapped this picture after the game and it landed on the front page of Sports Illustrated. The player on the front went to our rival HS Helena High.

We are enjoying family time with Tim, Liz, Jet, Ty, David, and Dan.... It is a full household, but a ton of fun. Hope you all get to have some family time over the holidays!!!!

Blogging Bonus

Josh6ygOne of my friends from CBC is a church planter in VA. Josh Karrer found out from one of my friends that I am a full time missionary from Brad Leach's Blog. He wanted to support our efforts, and wants to have us in for a service. I am looking forward to our time with him in the months ahead.... That was a serious blogging bonus. For all you bloggers out there keep the love coming!!!

Using those talents

On Sunday at a church called Victory Churchthat is a plant of abotu 5 years of age. I loved their pastor Curt Seaburg!!! It was a passionate group of people and they are a church that supports us!!! One thing that caught my attention was one of the musicians on Sunday. He played is guitar during the offertory and he was amazing. he strummed a Christmas carol on his acoustic guitar. Pastor Curt mentioned that they were selling his cd's full of Christmas carols. The cool thing was that all the money is going to the churches benevolence fund. I thought it was cool that he is using his talents to bless other people. How can you do something similar during the holidays?

Creating a environment in the workplace

Most of the people I minister with on Sundays work in a non-ministry setting. However, ministry is a perspective and calling, not an occupation. Let me tell you about an experince that happened today. I was at the chiropractic office with Tom Becker. By the way, he is an awesome Christian in the workplace. People love to be around him, and the office has such a good "feel" to it. He creates a posative enviornment in his workplace. So much so that I saw the UPS guy come up to the store and do something unique. He had a runner in his truck because it is the holiday season, and these runners bring in the packages to expedite the process of delivering the days heavier package load. Yet, when the driver pulled up he told the runner to wait in the truck. The driver went in and delivered the stuff. He then waved at everyone and jumed back into the brown vehicle and the runner straped back in to run to the next place. I doubt in the coarse of the day that this happens to much. The driver runs in, instead of the runner. But who does not love to be in Becker's chiropractic office? You just feel good after being around them for a little...

Do you create this atmosphere where you are today like that? It is simply a contagious love for God that overwhelmes the room. Tom Becker is one of the greatest workers for God, and some would say he is not in the mnistry..... or is he?

Difference a minute can make

I was traveling last week from Kansas City and had a little bit of a delay with my flight from some nasty snowy weather. I only had about 30 minutes for my layover in Atlanta and so I knew it would be tight. To make matters worse I was in the last row of the airplane on a full flight. We took off about 30 minutes late and so I hoped we could gain some time in the air. We landed and I had about 8 minutes until the flight departure time. I was already making plans in my head to call the Gerber's in Atlanta and ask for a place to crash for the night. I got off the plane and sprinted to my gate. As I rounded the corner the airline gate worker said, "are you Sebastian?" I said yes, and he told me they held the plane. They had me sit up in the first class section to save time, and I sat down and we took off. Those few moments that they held the plane made a world of difference to me that night. It meant I would be home, and would not have to deal with all the hassles of getting a new flight. The ironic thing was that we arrived in Baltimore that night ahead of schedule.

I was reminded of a instance that happened earlier that afternoon. I was on the way to the airport with Doug Reed and we saw a car stuck off the side of the road due to the snowy weather. We pulled over, jumped out, and pushed the car out in a few moments. We rescued this already crying teenage girl from having a horrible afternoon. It only took a moment of our time, but was probably a huge answer to prayer for her.

Funny how we helped that girl, and the Lord returned the favor with the airline attendant. As my brother Danny would say..... I was walking in the FOG.....

Thinking Eastern

Large_walkingfreasttowestAs I have mentioned in some earlier posts I have been reading a bunch lately. A guy that I have really been enjoying is Ravi Zacharias. It has been very helpful for me to see the difference between Eastern and Western thinking.

There is nothing wrong with thinking Eastern or Western but it is just different. In our endeavor to reach Greece we have to learn to think Eastern to reach this culture. To often in missions organizations we have gone into a culture with Western process and have failed to connect to the Eastern mind. The Apostle Paul said I have become all things to all men to reach as many as possible. Ravi in his book enlightens a little of this thought process.

Easterners value family more than Westerners. I live next to two elderly gentlemen that are widowers. Neither have family that visit. If fact we are probably the most active relationship that they have around holiday times. In a Western world we can get too busy for our family. However, in a Eastern culture family heritage is everything. Ravi told of a story about a time when he was introduced to speak in India. The intro was all about his father and his accomplishments. After about ten minutes of sharing about his father they simply said, "now here is his son". He was honored by his father being honored. Eastern cultures struggle to leave all and follow Christ because they want to keep their family ties strong.

The worst thing you can do in an Eastern culture is to bring dishonor to someone. In a Western world we often don't think that is the worst thing we can do. Just take a look at all the dirty laundry being hung out on national tv on daytime shows in America. Ravi tells of a time when his father kicked his family out of the house on a cold night. As the family sat under a stairwell he longed to go and sleep at a friends house. His mother refused and said it would be better for them to be outside than to bring dishonor to their father. Ravi cried all night in the cold as a young child to save his fathers honor. In a Western scenario we would never sacrifice our children's feelings for a parental mistake.

We as Westerners think like entrepreneurs in business. Just look how successful ebay business world has become. This visionary plays a part in the connection to religion. We as Westerners think about what we can do best for ourselves in all walks of life. A Western person presented with the gospel often accepts this because it is best for them in that situation. A Eastern individual has to think about family and honor. A Eastern person would rather brave the fires of Hell than bring dishonor to their family, and a Westerner would make a decision to avoid the fires of Hell to do what is best for themselves.

Time is another difference from Easterners and Westerners. We in a Western world look at time as linear or a line. When we miss a moment we can never go back. A Easterner thinks of time as circular. If you miss a appointment it will be there again later. It is why we are so fast paced in Western cultures. If we miss a moment we can never have it back. A Eastern culture is a lot less "productive" in our eyes because their will always be another opportunity. It is this mentality that can bring urgency to a Westerner with salvation. And this same thought shows why it is hard for a Easterner to have this urgency.

To reach the Eastern thinker we have to think like them. Neither is better than the other, they are just different. We have to find a way to connect to the Eastern thinking mind.

Kansas City

Doug_and_tonyThis weekend I am with one of my good friends Doug Reed. He was my youth pastor in Montana, and is now a full time evangelist. He lives in KC and we have been enjoying the time together. I am helping him with a little website stuff and a few other ventures. I had a wonderful meeting with his church staff over some excellent NY style pizza. His pastor Jason St John is such a great guy. And I ran into a few other guys that I knew from school and from mutual friends. Tonight I am going to hang with his mens group, and catch another pastoral meeting tomorrow before I fly out. I love being around the Reed's and catching up on our friendship. It has been a great day in Kansas City!!!

Say a prayer

Last night after our service we met a gal at the 24 hour diner.  Jamie asked a few questions and we found out she is a new mom, and her husband is in Iraq serving our country.  Lift up her and her family today as you read this blog.  The husband is named Spencer and he is due to return in April.  Kendra needs prayer to have a job, support a husband thousands of miles a way, and raise a new baby.  And pray that baby Korbin stays healthy!!

Scranton

Scranton
This week I was able to visit a great friend in ministry. The best
part about visiting Dave Twiss was that he knows and loves The
Office. I found myself in Scranton getting a first class tour of the
town. Since Dave is a local I learned all the fun background of this
great city. The highlight was seeing all the sights from the shows
intro. Here is the Penn Paper Co.... This is the building in the
intro....
